Wednesday, 30th

Gerling support the release of their new EP Who's Ya Daddy with a run of headline shows east coast shows during May and June. They perform Saturday 24 @ The Gaelic Club, Sydney; Saturday May 31 @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne; Saturday June 21 @ The Zoo, Brisbane. Supports at the Sydney and Melbourne shows will be The Sailors. The shows will also preview material from their upcoming album Bad Blood, due for release mid-August.

The John Butler Trio record at Melbourne's Revolver studio's throughout May before John heads overseas in June to perform in New Zealand and the UK. The dates in the UK will see John performing at The Isle Of Wight Festival, his own headline dates and supporting Silverchair on their last show of their world tour. The album Three will be released in the UK on June 9 and in New Zealand on EMI records. Then in July and August the band hit the road for a major Australian tour, followed by the release of a new studio album in late 2003 / early 2004.

The Beautiful Girls, fresh from appearances at the East Coast Blues and Roots festival, hit the road in May taking US singer / songwriter Mason Jennings with them. The tour sees dates in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Further details »

Cog take a break from working on their debut album for a return to Melbourne on Friday May 16 @ Espy Gershwin Room w/ Full Scale + Me The Conquerer and then Adelaide on Saturday May 17 @ Adelaide Unibar w/ Testeagles + Unprovoked Attack.

Saturday, 26th

The Cannanes head north in early May performing on Saturday May 3 @ Alliance Tavern, Spring Hill, Brisbane and Sunday May 4 @ Great Northern Hotel, Byron Bay. In other news they are recording a live set for Robbie Buck on Triple J and their new EP is due out in the next month or two.

Well-Placed Harmonies for Displaced People is a special benefit gig in support of refugees worldwide and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) happening on Sunday evening May 11 @ The Rob Roy. Performing will be Machine Translations, The Anyones (acoustic), Sir David Graney and Clare Moore, Treetops and Hotel Diablo. The event kicks off 6:45pm and entry is $10 or $7 concession/unwaged.

Minimum Chips, with their gig at the museum rained out, play their first show with new bass player Ellen Turner (Huon, Long Weekend, New Buffalo) on Sunday May 4 at The Rob Roy. Joining them will be The Emergency and Mimi Bourdeau. Ellen replaces former bass player Guy Blackman who moved to Japan six months ago.

Dan Brodie and The Broken Arrows team up with Dallas Crane and Dan Kelly & The Alpha Males during the month of May for the Dan Does Dallas tour. Kicking off May 14 in Newcastle the tour takes in shows in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Ballarat, Adelaide and Melbourne. Further details »

Bird Blobs launch their second album Stihl Life on Friday May 2 @ Rob Roy with special guests The New Season and Sinking Citizenship. The band features Tim Evans (ex-Sea Scouts), Nigel King, Steve Masterson (Limit Of Shunt) and Ian Wadley (Minimum Chips). The album was recorded by Simon Grounds (Rocket Science, Venom P. Stinger etc) at Sublime throughout the course of the last year and is out now on Unstable Ape Recordings.

Thursday, 24th

The City Lights headline the Hopetoun Hotel in Sydney on Friday May 2. The band will be pressing up a few limited edition copies of "You Stand Accused Young Man" which will be available to the first 30 people through the door on the night. The track is also available on the Lost Weekend compilation. Joining them is Dashboard from Melbourne and The Null Set from Sydney.

Toe To Toe return to the live arena this May for their first headline national tour in years. The tour is in support of their new EP Old Scores, New Glories. The seven track EP was recorded at Sydney's Damien Gerard's studio and is released in May on Sold Our Souls Records, distributed by Resist Records. Further details »

The Lovetones tour the US and Canada throughout the first half May to support the US release of the album Be What You Want on The Committee To Keep Music Evil/Bomp! Records. Joining them on the road will be comrades The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Further details »

Katalyst and UK based DJ duo Dynamo Productions join forces for a series of dates across Australia this May and June. The tour is the result of Dynamo Productions remixing the track 'Showtime' in 2002 for the recently released Katalyst remix album Agent Manipulated. Opening in Melbourne and Sydney only will be locals The Bamboos, who will have a 7" release to co-incide with the forthcoming tour. Further details »

Bernie Hayes Quartet release the album Domestic Departures on May 5 out through Half A Cow records. They launch the album in Melbourne on Saturday May 3 @ The Cornish Arms with support from the Kim Salmon Trio, as well as performing Friday May 2 @ The Cornish Arms with the The Tulips. The bulk of the new album was recorded by Genevieve Maynard and includes the single Your Green Light.

Endorphin aka Eric Chapus independently releases his fourth album Seduction on May 5 out through MGM distribution. The album features collaborations with Iva Davies of Icehouse fame, Sarah McGregor, Jade Macrae, Jacqui Hunt of Single Gun Theory fame and the Martinez brothers. In support of the release he will embark on a national tour throughout June and July. Further details »

Tuesday, 22nd

Iron On launch their new EP The Understudy on Thursday May 8 at The Zoo with The KT26ers and Turnpike. The EP, which is released on their own label Ruth Street Records, will be available in Brisbane record stores from May 1 and distributed nationally by MGM starting June 9.

Thursday, 17th

Trickledown launch their new CD Lest We Forgive on Saturday April 19 @ The Arthouse with guests Mutiny and The Bigots. As a special offer for the launch the band will be selling copies of the CD for $10. The 7 track CD was recorded and mixed at Subverse Studios in Melbourne, and mastered at Skyline Productions in New Jersey US.

Disaster Plan are currently on tour with Machine Translations. Dates still remaining are Wed April 23 @ Tilley's, Canberra w/ DCSLA; Thu April 24 Anzac Day Eve @ The Gaelic Club, Sydney w/ Youth Group + Thing of Thousand Strings; Sat April 26 @ Oxford Tavern, Wollongong. The current album Self Help Guide is out now on Sensory Projects with a live album due mid-year.

Hummel after five years, a stack of big guitars and several releases are calling it a day. The band play two last shows, firstly Saturday April 26 at Jade Monkey w/ The Trafalgars and Miyagi and then the final gig ever on Friday May 16 at The Engima w/ Edison, The Career Girls and Fear of Flying.

Charles Foster Kane embark an extensive east coast tour during April and May to launch their new self-titled EP. This, their second EP, was recorded at Black Box Studios with the production team of Magoo and Jeff Lovejoy. Further details »

In-Fidelity Records in collaboration with Corduroy are releasing a series of limited edition 7" records by Australian, NZ and occasionally US bands. Each one is a numbered edition of 400 copies and they will come out in batches of three. The first batch is The Blakelite Age - Silverback, Two-Lane Blacktop - The Rat and The Devastations - Leone. The second batch consists of The Sailers - Good Karma's Coming My Way, The Cants - Complications and The Drones - Bird In A Church.

Something for Kate have completed tracking songs for their new album, with 15 songs recorded and mixing well underway. The band will continue mixing in Australia for the next week, before heading off to the USA to complete some additional tracking in various studios in Los Angeles. Trina Shoemaker is once again recording, mixing and co-producing the new album with the band. The album is due to be finished in early May. In other news the band will be touring in Europe in early June supporting Silverchair, as well as playing shows in the UK and USA in late May / early June.

The Bunny Is Dead two day festival is happening this long weekend on Friday April 18 from midday till 6pm @ Annandale Hotel and Saturday April 19 from 1:30 till midnight @ Bat and Ball. The lineup for Saturday is Castings, The Head, The Red Sun Band, A Goldstar Secretm, Spod, Tooth, Origami, The Rebel Astronauts and International Karate. International Karate will be in Sydney for two shows this week. The band launch their debut album Weapons of Mass Protection alongside Adam Cole on Thursday April 17 at The Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills, with the aid of Seaworthy. Then on Friday they headline the Bunny Is Dead Easter festival at the Annadale Hotel with the band on stage 5.10pm, this show also doubles as the launch of issue #20 of Sadness Is In The Sky magazine.

Day Of Contempt commence their See Through The Lies tour this week. The band's debut album See Through The Lies was released last week in the USA and Europe. Dollar Bar head down to Melbourne for the first time in early May to play a run of dates. The shows are Thursday 8th @ The Pony, Friday 9th @ The Espy front bar and Sat 10th @ The Duke Of Windsor. Their 7-track mini-album Journey To The Centre Of Attention is out now on Permanent Records.

Splendour In The Grass organisers have announced the first round of acts for this year's festival happening on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July in Byron Bay. The initial line up is Powderfinger, The Living End, Magic Dirt, Jet, The Re-Mains, John Butler Trio, 1200 Techniques, Katalyst, The Superjesus, The Fergusons plus international guests Goldfrapp, The Alphinestars, The Music, Coldplay, Placebo and Death In Vegas. Neon, a Melbourne three piece, launch their 12" vinyl EP at the Hopetoun in Sydney on Wednesday April 23 and The Tote in Melbourne on Thursday April 24. The songs on the aformentioned EP were recorded at home on an eight-track recorder and the record will be released in stores Monday April 21.

Wednesday, 9th

Sway have finished recording their debut EP with producer Phil McKellar and it is currently being mastered. In other news the band will be performing on Saturday April 12 @ The Annandale Hotel joining The Cassanovas and The Mess Hall.

Tuesday, 8th

78 Saab have completed the recording of their second album with Tim Whitten. The as yet untitled album will be out in the near future but in the meantime the opening track 'Illusions' will appear on the new Secret Life of Us soundtrack in stores soon. To celebrate this event the band will be performig some of their new songs with all the old hits at their first headline show for 2003 on Saturday April 12 @ Vic On The Park w/ guests The Fergusons and The Null Set.

Blueline Medic release their second album Text_Bomb in stores on Monday April 21 out on Redline Records. The album, the follow-up to 2001's debut, was recorded in December of last year in Adelaide, with producer Darren Thompson of Thinktank and engineer Anj Malavazos at Soundhouse Studios, and features 11 songs. In support of the record the band will be embarking on a comprehensive album tour in June. The album is also being released in North America by Fueled By Ramen Records in late April, and in between Australian touring and promotion, the band will be playing in America and Europe in the coming 12 months.

Minimum Chips after a six month absence play their first show with new bass player Ellen Turner (Huon, Long Weekend, New Buffalo) on Sunday April 13 at the Melbourne Museum Sidney Myer Amphitheatre, with Private Benjamin and The Emergency. Ellen replaces former bass player Guy Blackman who moved to Japan six months ago. Entry is free, via Carlton Gardens (north of the museum) and the show starts around 4:30pm.

Thursday, 3rd

theHead is a new collaboration for Ben and Skot of ESN plus Tom Taylor from Vermilion. The completely instrumental outfit, using a combination of synthesizers, guitars, bass and samples play their first ever show on Saturday April 5th Vic On The Park, Enmore w/ Audiophile, Starboard and Founder.

Epicure are currently finishing up the recording of a new album which will be released during 2003. Out now is Armies Against Me, the first single to be lifted from the forthcoming album. The band return to the live scene for a run of Victorian shows during the next few months and national tour to be announced shortly. Further details »

The Wells Collective, the solo project for Darren Smallman, has just finished recording his debut long player entitled Along Sydon Drive. The 12 track album was produced & recorded by Darren & Rachael Lesley and is instores June 1 through MGM distribution.

Wicked Beat Sound System re-release their album New Soul Breaks with a special 12-track remix disc on April 14. The remix disc features brand new mixes of Wicked Beat Sound System tracks, plus remixes by Pocket and DJ Ken Cloud as well as three brand new recordings. The group will be performing shows during April, including some dates supporting Morcheeba, and will launch the re-released album in Sydney on Saturday May 3 @ Gaelic Club. Further details »

Brer Mouse tour Melbourne this April, performing Fri April 25 @ The Tote, Collingswood w/ International Karate, Oneironaut & This Is Your Captain Calling and Sat April 26 @ The Rob Roy, Fitzroy w/ Sodastream and Heligoland. Their debut recording Beatlemania is out now on Nice Noise Records.

Splendour In The Grass has been announced to return for round three this winter on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 of July at Byron Bay's Belongil Fields in the far North Coast of New South Wales. Tickets go on sale Friday May 2.
